Choosing the right piano music to practice is important
Having good piano pieces to practice is so important. If you pick pieces that are above your level you will find yourself struggling to learn them which will not help your playing and will demoralize you as well. If you can select short memorable pieces to practice then it will be a lot easier to get them sounding good, especially if they are short enough for you to memorize. It can also be a good idea to learn a couple of pieces by ear, this is to say that you hear a song and try to copy it. .You can copy just the melody if you wanted or you might even be adventurous enough to try and learn the chords too. Hearing a song over and over again and then trying to learn it on the piano will serve as a great help to training your ear which will come in very useful later on.
Things will become difficult
There will come a moment when playing will seem to become hard. As you advance from absolute beginner piano level to intermediate then the learning curve can become quite steep. times] when this can become depressing. If you find this happening you should just keep practicing knowing that it is a normal part of the process. Don't worry if you get bogged down and feel that you are not making any progress as this is a normal part of the process, rest assured that subconsciously you are learning and one day soon it will just all click as your brain and your hands suddenly start to cooperate.
Put your own style on it
Sometimes you can hear two artists who play the same song but each one will sound completely different, you too can do this with the pieces you are learning. You could try to be experimental and add different rhythms or chords. This will not always be possible especially if you have a strict piano teacher but having a little fun whilst finding out how to learn the piano can be a good thing.
To really master the piano you will have to get down to basics a lot, you will find you have to play uninspiring music occasionally and boring exercises. Don't give up here. Getting through the downtimes sometimes has to be done but you will come out the other side a much better player.
